Matchday Memories: On This Day 1980 – See Clive’s Strike Scrubbed As Sky Blues Take Palace To Cleaners!

Gerry Daly in his heyday

On this day (6th September) in 1980 the BBC’s Match of the Day cameras were at Highfield Road, in front of 13,001 fans, to film CCFC’s fifth Division One game of the season against Crystal Palace. Sky Blues’ manager Gordon Milne (now a CCFC member) was hoping for a reaction to the previous Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the ‘old enemy’ Aston Villa and certainly got it (albeit with a slice of luck thrown in)!

The youthful Sky Blues had some degree of confidence as they had defeated Arsenal and drawn with Liverpool in their previous two home games. There was a double clean sheet at half-time.  However the Glaziers struck first two minute’s after the break from the first UK footballing £1m teenager, Clive Allen (who was often a ‘thorn in CCFC’s flesh’ over later years)! However, it only took a couple of minutes for the Sky Blues equaliser from Gerry Daly who doubled up soon afterwards (53 minutes) to give the homesters a 2-1 lead (his debut goals for CCFC).

Andy in the Sky Blue

The game’s real controversy followed a couple of minute’s later when The Palace’s costly striker ‘scored’ from a great shot from outside the box for what he thought was a cast iron equaliser. However, even though cameras later showed the ball had entered the Sky Blues net and rebounded of the back stanchion into play, it all happened so fast the ref and linesmen thought it had struck a post and waved play on despite furious protests from the visitors!

Palace fumed to no avail and Andy Blair added insult to injury by netting City’s third on 73 minutes, the goal being set up by debut boy Peter Bodak and Garry Thompson (all three now fellow CCFPA members). Bodak became the fifteenth player under 21 to appear in the Sky Blues ranks that season!

After the game both rival managers (Gordon Milne and Terry Venables for Palace) agreed with Clive that it was a goal – only the officials disagreed. You can see the ref’s dilemma yourself by clicking on the image below (courtesy of our former committee member Dean Nelson):-

Gordon Milne’s Men who achieved that 3-1 win over the Palace that day lined up as follows:-

Gordon Milne-CCFC gaffer

Jim Blyth, Mick Coop, Brian Roberts, Andy Blair, Paul Dyson, David Jones, Peter Bodak, Gerry Daly, Garry Thompson (sub. Mark Hateley), Tom English and Steve Hunt

We are delighted to say that every single member of this team, as well as their ‘gaffer’, later became Association members Steve and Mark only a couple of years ago!

Terry Venables‘ chosen Palace XI was as follows:-

Jim Barron, Paul Hinshelwood, Terry Fenwick, Gerry Murphy, Jim Cannon, Billy Gilbert, Neil Smillie, Gerry Francis, Clive Allen, Mike Flanagan and Vince Hilaire   Referee:- D.Webb

Crystal Palace‘s Gerry Francis, of course, later became Sky Blues ‘skipper’

City did the double over an apparently doomed Glaziers/ Eagles winning 3-0 in London in mid February with goals from Gary Bannister and a brace from (now CCFPA member) Tom English.  The Sky Blues also got to the Semi Finals of the League Cup that season and finished sixteenth in the League on 36 points.

CCFC 1980-81

Crystal Palace indeed finished bottom by a country mile and were relegated with only nineteen points along with Norwich City and Leicester City who were also in the bottom three. Whisper it softly but Aston Villa took the title in 1980-81 four points ahead of runners up Ipswich Town.

Members News: Scottish Former Sky Blue Winger Is 57 Today. ‘Happy Birthday’ Dougie!!

Dougie in the Sky Blue

Hot on the heels of the birthday of another Sky Blue McGuire (Mick was 71 two days ago) CCFPA also wishes another member, former Sky Blue winger ‘Dougie’ McGuire a very happy birthday for today. Born in Bathgate, Scotland on 6th September 1967, Dougie is celebrating his 57th birthday today!  Though he had a footballing career of well over a decade much of it was spent ‘North of the Border’ and only readers with long memories are likely to remember his Sky Blues days.

‘Dougie’ began his footballing career with (Glasgow) Celtic Boys Club before graduating to their YTS scheme in April 1984 turning professional in 1986. There he gained Scotland Youth International honours. He was sent out on loan to Dumbarton and then south of the border to Sunderland to gain experience but when he was brought to Highfield Road as a young prospect in August 1988 for £40k he had notched up only a handful of first team appearances. He was signed from the Scottish club after a week’s trial after an outstanding performance at a pre-season friendly at Gloucester City.

Sadly, he did little better at CCFC appearing only four times  in the Sky Blue first team (including three from the bench) without scoring. Glandular fever evidently impeded his progress and appearances for CCFC. Eventually he  made his debut as a sub in a Division One game at Highbury when Arsenal beat the Sky Blues 2-0 on 22th August 1989, making his full debut on 16th September at outside left at Highfield Road v Luton Town when a Gary Bannister strike earned all the points.

Dougie at Golf Day 2010 with CCFPA’s Billy Bell

Dougie made his last first team appearance for the Sky Blues at Derby County’s Baseball ground  on 30th December 1989, again coming off the bench, but the Sky Blues were well beaten by 4-1! The winger’s contract was cancelled in the following November and Dougie moved back to Scotland with Cumnock Juniors (briefly in Jan.1991) and then to Queen of the South in June 1991 where he came into his own scoring a dozen times in 95 appearances.

Further spells followed at Stranraer (1994-96), Alloa Athletic and Albion Rovers (1996-May 1997).  Dougie then dropped down a level or two playing in the rough-and-tumble of the Ayrshire junior circuit with the likes of both  Irvine (Meadow and Thistle) Ardeer Thistle, Irvine Meadow (again), Ardrossan Winton Rovers and Dalry Thistle.

In February 2004 he then became  Ardeer Thistle’s  player/manager and was full time ‘gaffer’ on hanging up his boots in 2008-09. Dougie continued his link with soccer by, in June 2011, joining with former Celtic team mate Drew Walsh as co-manager of another junior club Dalry Thistle.

Dougie has attended a few Association events in the past most memorably our Golf Day reunion in 2010.

Have a really good birthday today Dougie!

Matchday Memories: On This Day 2014 – See Some/All Of Sky Blues’ Ricoh Return As Nouble Nobbles Gills!

‘Elvis’- Sky Blue ‘gaffer’

On this day (5th September) in 2014 Sky Blue gaffer and former player (and now CCFPA member) Steven Pressley brought the Sky Blues back to their home again after their painful exile at Northampton Town‘s Sixfields Stadium. They had started their season seven games previously with three home games (two in League One and a League Cup tie) at Sixfields. On this day 27,306 were packed the the renamed ‘City of Coventry’ Arena for their longed for ‘Ricoh Return’. This was their second best gate at the Arena since they first arrived in 2005. There were just under five hundred Gills fans visiting for the day! Sadly Sky Blues fans have also had to get used to ‘Coming Home’ to the Arena in more recent years!

The game, in front of SKY TV cameras (see below), kicked off fifteen minutes late and the condition of the pitch looked dodgy.

Frank Nouble in the Sky Blue

However, the players did not let the Sky Blue Army down as big centre forward (and recent CCFPA recruit) Frank Nouble scored CCFC’s only goal of the game after only ten minutes in a 1-0 win over Gillingham. The Gills’ captain was former Sky Blue (and now CCFPA member) Cody McDonald. Their team’s goalie was also former Sky Blue loanee Steven Bywater.

Also, courtesy of former CCFPA committee member Dean Nelson, you can watch the highlights by clicking on the picture below. I shows not only the coolly taken goal from ‘Big Frank’ but also a spectacular but sadly failed long range lobbed goal effort from John Fleck:-

If the above is not enough, thanks again to Dean, you can watch the full two hours plus SKY broadcast of the match by clicking on the image below. It includes the whole game, some vignettes of the club’s recent turbulent times and some punditry, including by Sky Blue former defensive hero, CCFC’s current head of Community (and returned CCFPA committee member) Dave Busst!:-

Frank is pictured (right) in the Ricoh supporters lounge with fellow CCFPA members and Sky Blues stars of the past Paul Williams and Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts. On 14th April, in the return, the Sky Blues fought out a 1-1 draw with the team from Kent.

The win on this day put them eighth in the league. ‘Elvis’ was to make way on the 22nd February 2015 for Tony Mowbray (appointed  from 1st March 2015). Neil McFarlane and Dave Hockaday acted as caretakers in the gap.  The Sky Blues final League One position was seventeenth with Gillingham in twelfth spot.

CCFC 2014-15

At the top Bristol City (Champs). runners up MK Dons and third placed (via the play offs) Preston North End got themselves promoted. At the bottom Notts County, Crawley Town, Leyton Orient and bottom club Yeovil Town fell through the trap door.

Matchday Memories: On This Day 1992 – See Oldham K.O.’d Cold By Bold Sky Blues

Posted by · Leave a Comment

On this day (5th September) in 1992 the Sky Blues were well into their Premier League season under ‘Cov Kid’ former player turned manager Bobby Gould (now a CCFPA member).  Phil Neal, the Gouldfather’s Assistant (who would go on to take over the gaffer’s chair from Bobby the following season) became part of the England set up this season.

Kevin Gallacher

More than eleven thousand fans were present at Boundary Park to see the Sky Blues take on Oldham Athletic in their seventh league game of the season. There was some confidence in the Sky Blue camp because they had already won their previous three away games at Tottenham Hotspur, Wimbledon and Sheffield Wednesday and their fourth successive away win by 1-0 today in Lancashire was to equal a club record.

Robert in the Sky Blue

The solitary and winning Sky Blue goal which can be viewed below (courtesy of former CCFPA committee member Dean Nelson) came from  Kevin Gallacher, his first of the season, on 56 minutes from a sweet volley following a nod on from  Robert Rosario (now Kevin’s fellow CCFPA member). Robert was lucky, however, to stay on the pitch after an altercation with the ‘Latics Richard Jobson (and was later subbed) but the win was thoroughly deserved. The Sky Blue fans among the 11,254 crowd went home very happy!

Click on the image to see Kevin’s goal again:-

The Sky Blues’ team this day (CCFPA members underlined) was:-

Steve Ogrizovic, Brian Borrows, Kenny Sansom, Peter Atherton, Andy Pearce, Lloyd McGrath, Peter Ndlovu, Lee Hurst, Robert Rosario (sub. Phil Babb), Kevin Gallacher (sub. Terry Fleming) and John Williams.

Sky Blues Peter in the 1990s

Joe Royle‘s Oldham XI lined up:-

Jon Hallworth, Steve Redmond, Neil Pointon, Nick Henry (sub. Neil Adams), Richard Jobson, Ian Marshall, Gunnar Halle (sub. Roger Palmer), Ian Olney, Graeme Sharp, Mike Milligan (c) and Paul Bernard  Referee: D.Allison

The Sky Blues completed the double over the ‘Latics beating them 3-0 at Highfield Road in January with a Kevin Gallacher brace and another from our ‘Bulawayo Bullet’ Peter Ndlovu (who later became this Association’s 300th member)!

CCFC 1992-93

The Sky Blues finished the Premier League season in fifteenth spot with Oldham Athletic just escaping relegation with the same points as the relegated Crystal Palace but a better goal difference. Middlesbrough and bottom club Nottingham Forest were also Division Two bound.

At the other end of the table Manchester United were deserved Champions being fully ten points clear of also-ran runners up Aston Villa!
