Stuart in the Sky Blue

Just to remind you that  CCFPA member and Sky Blues former full back/ defender Stuart Giddings is our ‘special guest’ later tonight (ko 7.45pm) at the CBS Arena as the Sky Blues’ take on high flying Blackburn Rovers in a Championship clash. Mark Robins men are desperate for points languishing in 19th in the table with a poor performance in that 3-0 defeat at Leeds United at the weekend.

We are sure Stuart will get a warm welcome from a likely large crowd at the CBS Arena tonight. He is a regular attender alongside family members and like all Sky Blues fans will be looking for an uptick in the energy and quality of performance shown by the home team easpecially as Rovers, managed by former CCFC midfielder John Eustace, may well feature popular ex Sky Blue duo Kyle McFadzean and Dom Hyam (all three Association members now).

Oggy in the Press Box

Look out for Stuart ‘around the lounges’ pre-match for Q&As in the company of our member, club host and ex Sky Blue defender Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts. He also may well be persuaded to do a half-time pitch side interview. After the game, as is tradition, Stuart will be down in the G-Casino appearing on stage with CCFPA’s Billy Bell in their Lady Gs Lounge to wrap up the evening with more craic and a Sky Blue song!

As usual we expect the CCFC Legend that is Steve Ogrizovic (also an Association member) to be doing live match-day commentary for BBC CWR for those who can’t make the game.

There will also be other CCFC Former Players present at the game (all CCFPA members) including Association committee members Dave Bennett, Dietmar Bruck and Kirk Stephens as well as Peter Hormantschuk and Graham Walker.

CCFPA Committee member Mike Young and recent former chairman Jim Brown will also have their usual pages in the club’s excellent programme PUSB!

Stuart in July 2002 in England U17 shirt

To remind readers Stuart, now 38, was brought through the Club’s youth system and collected England caps from under 16 to U19 level along the way. He made his Sky Blues first team debut in the Championship in May 2004 as a sub and made his full debut the following season.

He is yet another illustration of the success of CCFC’s record of bringing through young players to first team action. Even today the Club relies on many players who cut their teeth in the Sky Blues Academy.  Stuart was also a Birmingham Senior Cup winner with City in 2006-07.

In total, Stuart turned out nineteen times for the first team before being released in March 2008 (after a loan spell at Oldham Athletic). Since 2009 Stuart has played at Hinckley Athletic (two spells), Ilkeston Town and Darlington (on a season’s loan) but his career was sadly set back by a long-term knee ligament injury from 2011.

Stuart has become an increasingly frequent attender of Sky Blues home games and has undertaken the chores of being the Association’s ‘special guest’ at both the Ricoh in the past (including broadcasting with the BBC CWR team) during City’s exile at St Andrews as well as subsequent seasons back at the Ricoh/CBS Arena. He has also turned out for the Sky Blues Legends XI in matches supporting various charitable causes. He was at Wembley supporting the Sky Blues in their recent F.A.Cup semi-final. Stuart has also been present at our most recent major former player gatherings including last May’s Legends Day 2024.

Fingers crossed Stuart sees a much improved Sky Blue performance tonight with three points to help them climb the Championship table!

Matchday Memories: On This Day 2016 – See Sky Blues Prevail At Vale With Venusian Managerial Debut

Mark Venus

In a season of three ‘gaffers’, on this day just seven year’s ago (1st October 2016) the Sky Blues were due to face Port Vale at Vale Park in their eleventh League One game of the season under new Management. Assistant ‘gaffer’/Technical Director Mark Venus had stepped up to the plate for his first game in charge following Tony Mowbray parting company with CCFC by mutual consent.

Mogga ousted as Sky Blue Manager

Tony’s season had started poorly and got worse. It began with a 1-0 defeat at Swindon Town followed by two home goalless draws against Shrewsbury Town and Bury and a defeat by the odd goal in three at Bradford City.  Additionally, though we had won our opening League Cup tie by the odd goal in five at home to Portsmouth in the second game of the new season, two games previously we became badly unstuck in the second round being slaughtered 6-1 at Carrow Road, home of Norwich City. Later league draws against Northampton Town (h), Millwall (a), Oldham Athletic (h) and, last time out, Wimbledon (h) had been interspersed with defeats at Fleetwood Town and Gillingham. In short, propping up the division, the Sky Blues were badly in need of their first league win and a new manager bounce!

Marvin Sordell, Coventry City

Pleased to say, under Mark Venus today, the Sky Blues managed to take the points in the Potteries as they beat the Vale by two clear goals! There were was a smallish crowd of 5,601 watching the game including a brave 604 members of the Sky Blue Army! Even more pleasingly the Sky Blues defeated a team that had won all of their previous home games this season!

Chris McCann in the Sky Blue

City’s goals came, one in each half, from Marvin Sordell, after 36 minutes, and (City’s loanee from Wigan Athletic) Chris McCann eighteen minutes from the final whistle. Marvin’s firm strike came after he was tee’d up by (now CCFPA member) Gael Bigirimana after some nifty footwork in the box. McCann’s close range finish was made by Dan Agyei soon after he had robbed a Vale defender in the box. The home team’s defence seemed jittery in general and, by and large, City deserved the win!

Matchday Memories: On This Day 2003 – See JH Watch Sky Blue Sub JJ Jump Start Sky Blues Alex Win

Gary in the Sky Blue

Julian Joachim in the Sky Blue

On this day (1st October) in 2003 the Sky Blues, under player-manager Gary McAllister, were facing their ninth Division One game of the season with only two wins to their name so far this season (and three losses). Dario Gradi, ‘gaffer’ of our opponents Crewe Alexandra, was recovering from heart surgery and might have felt his team were unlucky in this game as they hit the woodwork three times! However, the Sky Blues smallest league crowd for nine years (11,553) watched as the out of favour Sky Blue winger Julian Joachim (now a CCFPA member) sparked a home win over the Alex by two clear goals.

Future Sky Blue ‘goalie Clayton Ince was between the sticks for Alex that day. There was no score at half-time when the legendary former Sky Blue manager (and CCFPA member) Jimmy Hill was interviewed on the pitch by BBC CWR’s Stuart Linnell (left). JH would have been pleased to see City’s first goal arrive only five minutes into the second period courtesy of a rare headed goal from the ‘gaffer’, Macca finishing off a cross from JJ (now Julian’s CCFPA member) Clayton Ince.

Another header two minutes after the hour mark, this time from City striker (and now CCFPA member) Andy Morrell from a free kick taken by another Association recruit Youssef Safri doubled the lead and proved to be the final goal of the game.

Thanks to CCFPA’s former committee member Dean Nelson you can watch highlights of the game by clicking on the image below:-

The Sky Blues lined up as follows (CCFPA members underlined):-
Scott Shearer, Andrew Whing, Steve Staunton, Youssef Safri (sub. Steven Warnock -85), Mo Konjic, Richard Shaw, Graham Barrett, Gary McAllister, ‘Dele Adebola (sub. Julian Joachim -46), Andy Morrell and Claus Jorgensen (sub. Yazid Mansouri -70)

Crewe Alexandra‘s team took the field as follows:-

Clayton Ince, David Wright, David Vaughan, Kenny Lunt (sub. Paul Edwards -81), Stephen Foster, Richard Walker, Neil Sorvel, Justin Cochrane, Billy Jones, Dean Ashton and Ben Rix (sub. Lee Bell -60)       Referee:- J.Ross

More match action

The 2003-04 season saw the Sky Blues’ hot seat vacated successively by Gary Mac (who left to look after his sick wife at the end of the year), then by Gary’s Assistant Eric Black and finally Peter Reid (both now CCFPA members). It was Peter who saw out the season in which the Sky Blues’s campaign petered out to finish twelfth! Crewe Alexandra finished eighteenth but got revenge over the Sky Blues the following April in the return beating us 3-1 at Gresty Road.

CCFC 2003-04

Norwich City (Champs), runners up West Bromwich Albion and sixth placed Crystal Palace (winners of the playoffs) were all promoted.

At the other end of the table Walsall, Bradford City and bottom club AFC Wimbledon all went down.

Dennis Churms RIP (in Bantams kit)

The Association recently heard the sad news that our member Dennis Churms, hitherto CCFC’s oldest former player and our oldest member died aged 93 at the end of last month, just over a week ago! CCFPA’s recent former chairman Jim Brown has been in touch with the family of Dennis to send our condolences.

Briefly, Dennis first played for home town club (Rotherham United) from 1950 joining CCFC in June 1956. Dennis netted twice in his ten CCFC first team games, scoring on his debut, but was used mainly as a reserve before moving to Exeter City in March 1957 and subsequently Gillingham (c/s 1958) ending his career as a ‘legend’ with Folkestone (where he settled) playing until age 35!  We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of our former ‘Bantam’.

Denis when he joined CCFPA in 2021

For those CCFC fans who wish to pay their respects to Dennis in person his funeral will take place on 11th October at Hawkinge Crematorium, near Folkestone at 11.30 am.

Dennis joined CCFPA in 2021 but unfortunately never made it back to watch his old team at the CBS Arena. Now Jim has published an extensive appreciation/ obituary of the life and playing days of Dennis which forms a major part of his latest historical blog-post ‘Jim Brown’s Journal‘ which can always be found via the link below:-
