Matchday Memories: On This Day 1997 – Strachan’s Sky Blues Squeak Past The Tangerines In L.Cup

Posted by · Leave a Comment

On this first day of October 1997 the Sky Blues, managed by Gordon Strachan, were on League Cup duty. In the Premier League things were not going too well so far with the season nine games in and, apart from the opening 3-2 win over Chelsea only one other top flight win so far (and only five more goals) with City in twelfth place. Last time out a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers‘ Ewood Park was all they could manage.

Gordon the Gaffer

Midweek the Sky Blues faced Blackpool in the second leg of their Second Round tie having lost by the only goal of the game (a 76th minute header from Andy Linighan) at Bloomfield Road on a rainy and windswept evening in mid September. There was controversy in that the Sky Blues forward (and fairly recent CCFPA recruit) Kyle Lightbourne claimed a laser light pen shone from the crowd had thwarted a clear goal opportunity. The Sky Blue Army were expecting better things tonight, though only 9,605 turned up to see if the Sky Blues could save the tie.  In the event CCFC just scraped through 3-2 on aggregate at Highfield Road. Injury hit City looked in deep trouble when Linighan scored again in the 36th minute and the Sky Blues went into the break 2-0 down on aggregate.

Dion in the Sky Blue

However, City’s captain Gary McAllister, who had a magnificent game, led a stirring fightback and clawed things back with a brace of penalties, the second an 89th minute winner awarde fror needless handball in the box by the Tangerines Marvin Bryan (who proved the villain of the piece for the visitors)!

Gary Mac’s first penalty strike came a minute after the hour mark awarded for Bryan’s foul on (now CCFPA member) Dion Dublin in the box. And it was Dion himself who scored the Sky Blues second with a flying header, his fiftieth goal for CCFC!

Rovers had their chances but their finishing was often wayward and, conversely, Macca and Dion were very clinical. The 3-1 win on the night (3-2 aggregate) was enough to earn a Third Round date back at Highfield Road against Everton.

The graphic below provides all the team details:-

Of the thirteen players and unused sub, the manager’s son Gavin Strachan) who wore the Sky Blue shirt on the Highfield Road pitch that night, only two (Gary and Michael) have not yet joined this Association. The referee was Mr. Mike Reed (Birmingham). The ‘Pools’ unused subs were Chris Malkin, Nigel Worthington and James Quinn.

The Sky Blues had little trouble disposing of the Toffeemen in Round Three of the League Cup beating Everton 4-1. However the Fourth Round trip to Highbury to meet Arsenal proved a step too far as the Gunners won a 99th minute extra time goal from Dennis Bergkamp!

CCFC 1997-98

CCFC finished the 1997-98 Premiership season in a comfortable mid table position of eleventh. Arsenal took the title this season by a single point from Manchester United. The relegated trio was Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley and (bottom) Crystal Palace.

Matchday Memories: On This Day 1988 – See Both Speedie & Slaven Score Trebles But ‘Boro Beat Sky Blues!

John Sillett CCFC gaffer

On this day (1st October) in 1988 former Sky Blue full-back turned ‘gaffer’ (the late) John Sillett and his Sky Blues were involved in a seven goal thriller at Highfield Road against Middlesbrough (but sadly lost). This was their fifth game of the Division One season. After a 1-0 home defeat in their opener against Everton came three victories on the trot. First there was an encouraging 2-1 win at Hillsborough over Sheffield Wednesday followed by the 3-0 Highfield Road pasting of Charlton Athletic. Last time out Wimbledon had been tamed at their place by the only goal of the game from Garry Bannister. Expectations going into today’s game were therefore high.

However, today the 11,859 fans in Highfield Rd saw City score first yet go 4-1 down. A player from each side got a hat-trick and the Sky Blues nearly pulled the game out of the fire but the Sky Blues had to settle for a defeat by the odd goal in seven! Additionally, the Sky Blues hat trick, combative inside forward David Speedie contributed an immaculate treble of headers (seven; sixty and 73 minutes) each made by the skill and crossing accuracy of (now fellow CCFPA member) David Smith

Sky Blue Speedie

In truth, the attractive Boro side built by manager Bruce Rioch, often played the Sky Blues off the park but to be fair the two Davids led a Sky Blue fight back that almost succeeded. Bernie Slaven took the honours for City’s opponents also confidently netting a 28 minute powerful first half treble (eight; 24 and 36 minutes) aided and abetted by Stuart Ripley. Then, what proved to be their winner, came from Marke Burke (56 minutes). What a way for ‘Boro to get their first away win of the season! The Sky Blue fans who made up most of the 14,521 crowd left at the end exhilarated but obviously disappointed by the outcome for Sillett’s men.

Thanks to former CCFPA committee member Dean Nelson you can see all the action by clicking on the link or image below:-
The two teams lined up as follows:-

Sky Blues:

Steve Ogrizovic, Brian Borrows, Greg Downs, Steve Sedgley, Brian Kilcline (sub. David Phillips), Trevor Peake, Micky Gynn, David Speedie, the late Cyrille Regis, Gary Bannister and David Smith.

Apart from Gary all the players above went on to join CCFPA.

CCFC gaffer Tony Mowbray

Bruce Rioch‘s ‘Boro side lined up as follows:-

Stephen Pears, Gary Parkinson, Colin Cooper, Alan Kernaghan, Gary Hamilton, Gary Pallister, Bernie Slaven, Mark Brennan, Mark Burke, Paul Kerr and Stuart Ripley     Referee:- R.Nixon

Future Sky Blue gaffer Tony Mowbray was an important member of the Boro squad at this time but was injured for the game!

In early February the two sides played the return at Ayresome Park with City third in the table and the ‘Boro tenth. The result was a 1-1 stalemate with Bernie Slaven getting the home side’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time to a Cyrille Regis opener. Though both teams slipped down the table a bit Middlesbrough‘s subsequent decline was much steeper.

CCFC 1988-89

At the end of the campaign the season’s table-toppers were Arsenal who pipped Liverpool on goal average to the title. Sillett’s Sky Blues finished the 1988-89 season in a heady seventh spot in Division One!  Our opponents today, despite their performance, eventually ended up as one of the relegated trio of clubs a point adrift of safety in eighteenth spot. Below them were West Ham United and Newcastle United (seven points adrift of the Hammers and nine from safety).

Matchday Memories: On This Day 1968 – The Sky Blues Nail The Hammers In L.C. Replay

On this first evening of October in 1968 the Sky Blues under ‘gaffer’ Noel Cantwell, beat West Ham United 3-2 in a League Cup replay at Highfield Road. The two sides had fought out a goalless draw at the Boleyn the previous week, the Sky Blues having removed Portsmouth from the competition in Round Two with a 2-0 win at Highfield Road earlier in the month.

City had not forgotten that they had also been beaten 2-1 by the Hammers at home in their third Division One game of the season in August as one of their five defeats in their first eleven league games (and only two wins so far). The Sky Blues fans within the crowd of 27,594 perhaps feared they would go out this evening!

Ernie Hunt in the Sky Blue

John Tudor in the Sky Blue

Instead they saw a hard won 3-2 City victory. They witnessed Sky Blues go two goals up late in the first half, the first through ‘Ernie’ Hunt (on 42 minutes) forcing in a free kick by Ernie Machin (both great players, and later CCFPA members, sadly no longer with us)! A minute from the break John Tudor netted the second though looking suspiciously off-side. However, there was still time for 1966 England World Cup star Geoff Hurst to pull one back with an instant volley on the stroke of half-time.

Dave Clements in Sky Blue action

Our little terrier of an inside forward Ian Gibson (another sad loss to the Sky Blues family and the wider footballing world) was back in the Sky Blues side and gave England captain Bobby Moore a bit of a run around as a keen second half was in prospect.

Then, eight minutes into the second half Ernie and John’s now fellow CCFPA member Dave Clements increased City’s lead to a degree of comfort poking the ball past Bobby Ferguson after John Tudor shot rebounded from the post.

ImageThe Hammers other World Cup winning star Martin Peters then made the score a bit more respectable for the visitors getting the Hammers second four minutes from time as their late flurry failed to find an equaliser.

The team’s were slightly different from the programme (top right).

Cantwell’s CCFC lined up:-

Noel Cantwell- CCFC Manager

Bill Glazier, Mick Coop, Dietmar Bruck, Ernie Machin*, George Curtis*, Brian Hill*, ‘Ernie’ Hunt*, Willie Carr, John Tudor, Ian Gibson* (sub. Ernie Hannigan*) and Dave Clements.

Sadly, though all team members went on to join this Association, no less than six of them (*) have since passed away, Brian, ‘Gibbo’, all three Ernies and most recently ‘Iron Man’ George!

West Ham‘s XI was as follows:-
Bobby Ferguson, Bobby Howe, John Charles, Martin Peters, John Cushley, Bobby Moore, Harry Redknapp, Ron Boyce, Trevor Brooking, Geoff Hurst and Brian Dear.                    Referee:- I.P.Jones (Glamorgan)

After all that effort, the Sky Blues failed to progress any further in the competition being knocking out by Swindon Town in Round Four losing 3-0 away in the replay after a 2-2 draw at Highfield Road (our goals came from John Tudor and Tony Hateley). In the league, in the fourth game between the two clubs that season, West Ham comprehensively beat the Sky Blues 5-2 in March at Upton Park in the Division One return game (City’s goals came from the two Ernies, Machin and Hunt).

CCFC 1968-69

3001

The Hammers finished eighth in the League in 1968-69 whereas the Sky Blues had to face a last day cliff-hanger to survive on the last day with a goalless draw at Highfield Road against Division One runners up (to Leeds United), Liverpool.

That single point guaranteeing twentieth place on 31 points separated us from the relegated Leicester City on thirty points and bottom club Queens Park Rangers on only eighteen points!
