1986-87 F.A.Youth Cup Squad Ricoh Reunion next Saturday

The Association will be facilitating a reunion of the Club’s victorious F.A. Youth Cup squad of 1986-87 at the Sky Blues last Ricoh home fixture of the 2011-12 season at the must-win Doncaster Rovers game next Saturday April 21st. We are confident that nearly all of the squad will be able to attend the pre-match meal and be paraded before the crowd at half-time to receive the welcome of fans 25 years after they helped the Club to a fantastic Cup double.

Some of the victorious group of the then youthful Sky Blues are pictured above with ‘Mr Coventry City’ and CCFPA Patron and Honorary Life President Joe Elliott along with the teams coach at the time, former Sky Blue star and CCFPA member Mick Coop.

We also hope to have quite a number of members of the victorious F.A.Cup winning senior squad at the Ricoh as the Association’s guests for the day. Look out on this site for further news and confirmation of participants as next Saturday approaches.

Barry Powell hopes the Sky Blues tame the Lions

CCFPA is delighted to announce that Sky Blues star of the seventies Barry Powell will be the Association’s ‘special guest’ at the Club’s upcoming crucial home game against Millwall this coming Tuesday evening 17th April 2012.  Barry is a not infrequent visitor to the Ricoh and here last monthe for the annual Legends Day gathering of former Sky Blues. We welcome him back!

Born locally in Kenilworth, Barry will be remembered as a dynamic attacking midfielder who graced Highfield Road in the middle of the 70?s decade. Usually wearing number 10 Barry was signed for £75000 in September 1975 by manager Gordon Milne from midland rivals Wolves (with whom he had served since joining as an apprentice in 1972 after, ironically, a failed trial with the Sky Blues). Barry picked up 4 England Under 23 Caps on the way. Barry left Molineux having made over well over 70 first team appearances and joined a City side now established in the top tier but typically finishing in the bottom half of the table. However the new Milne blend (including Barry, Terry Yorath, Tommy Hutchison and formidable scoring duo Ian Wallace and Mick Ferguson -all Association members now) produced two of our best ever finishes in Division 1, 7th in 1977-78 and 10th the following season. During his four and half season’s with the City Barry notched up a tidy 30 goals in his 180 appearances before moving to Derby County in October 1979. Barry spent summer loan periods in the USA with Portland Timbers whilst with both the Sky Blues and Derby and also played in the far east on leaving the Baseball Ground (with the Bulova and South China clubs in Hong Kong) as well as clocking up appearances in the UK for Burnley and Swansea City. He spent a swansong season back at Wolves where in 1988 he moved from playing into coaching. Barry was back at Highfield Road as Community Development Officer in 1990 and later tried his hand in non-league management/ coaching at the likes of Aberystwyth Town, Stafford Rangers and Hednesford Town as well as scouting and assessing.

Look out for him around the corporate lounges on match day, on the pitch at half-time and on the stage in Lady Gs Show Bar at the G-Casino after the game where he will receive a friendly quizzing from the Association’s Billy Bell.

We also expect to see at the game Legends Lounge regulars Lol Harvey, Brian Nicholas, Micky Gynn, Dave Bennett, Peter Hormantschuck, Ken Satchwell, Ian Goodwin, Bill Tedds, Gordon Simms, Ron Farmer, Kirk Stephens, Bob Wesson, Peter Wyer, Paul Culpin, Claus Jorgensen and  Dietmar Bruck

Sumo wrestles with Coventry Charity Cup Dinner

Kevin and Mick

Association member and Sky Blue scoring sensation of the 1990s Mick Quinn was a special guest at the 21st Sporting Dinner arranged by the Coventry Charity Cup committee on April 5th last at the Royal Court Hotel, Coventry.  CCFPA has good links with CCC and Associate member Kev Monks is on their General committee.

By all accounts  ‘Sumo’ was good value at the four course dinner entertaining the guests with tales of his football career and life since hanging up his boots. He is pictured with one of the CCFPA’s committee members (former Major) Kevin Heffernan at the event. Though CCFPA is slightly disappointed neither Kevin or Mick are wearing the official Association tie to the occasion we do recognise that the Dinner was requested to be ‘black tie’ and sky blue stripes might have seemed out of place!  Kevin looks resplendent in his army dress uniform whilst Mick looks equally natty in his DJ!

Legends Day 2012: Video Now Online

Legends Day 2012 was our biggest and best so far. Over 200 photos of the day are available under the ‘Galleries’ tab on the website. We have now also uploaded the video used on the Day as a background to the Legends Reunion Dinner in the 1883 Lounge when we entertained 50 of our former stars at the Ricoh on the 24th March 2012.

The 10 minute video, conceived and produced by CCFPA Associate member Dean Nelson features every one of the former players guesting at Legends Day and contains photo stills, Sky Blue related anthems and match excerpts covering seven decades of the history of CCFC -from Trevor Lewis and Bill Gray in the 1940s/50s to Claus Bech Jorgensen and Marcus Hall in the noughties.

If you want to relive the playing styles, playing strips, personalities and performances as the Bantams turned into the Sky Blues and key moments in the Club’s and its players achievements over the years click on our ‘Videos’ tab and take a look!
