Bobby Gould- Sky Blue Manager

On this day (19th August) in 1992 the  new Sky Blues’ gaffer Bobby Gould (now a CCFPA member) took his team to White Hart Lane for their second match of the newly rebadged Premier League season having kicked off with an encouraging 2-1 Highfield Road win against Middlesbrough four days previously. The home team had sacked Peter Shreeves at the end of the previous season and were now co managed by Doug Livermore and (their legendary former ‘keeper) Ray Clemence.

The Sky Blues created a deserved win at Tottenham Hotspur as our strikers (all CCFPA members now) Peter Ndlovu, Robert Rosario, David Smith and John Williams (‘TFP’) looked a potent and creative force and created a goodly number of chances. All four are now Association members! ‘Spurs lost defender Jason Cundy to a head injury in the first minute and, though substituted, the defence looked disrupted.

CCFPA members both, David Smith and John Williams (who scored the goals against ‘Boro) again proved quick and tricky opponents on the flanks and it was ‘The Flying Postman’  who grabbed both goals in the Sky Blues’ 2-0 victory on four minutes (using his accuracy) and thirty minutes (using his pace).

City even had the luxury of missing a 72nd minute penalty, their first in the Premiership, and it was CCFPA member Micky Gynn who was the culprit! There were 24,388 fans in White Hart Lane to see the contest.

The Flying Postman

For the record the Sky Blues that day comprised:-

Steve Ogrizovic, Terry Fleming, Kenny Sansom, Stewart Robson, Andy Pearce, Peter Atherton, Micky Gynn, Lee Hurst, Robert Rosario, John Williams (sub. Peter Ndlovu -70) and David Smith

We are delighted to report that every single member of this team, along with their ‘gaffer’, have since joined this Association!

Tottenham‘s team was as follows:-
Ian Walker (sub. Erik Thorsvedt -46), Terry Fenwick, the late Justin Edinburgh, David Howells, Jason Cundy (sub. Andy Gray -4), Neil Ruddock, Andy Turner, Gordon Durie, Vinnie Samways, Darren Anderton and Paul Allen   Referee: Dermot Gallacher

The Flying Postman ensured City did the double over Tottenham Hotspur’s that season scoring the only goal of the game at Highfield Road in mid September in the return. The Sky Blues finished that first Premier League season in fifteenth place but only three points clear of trouble whilst ‘Spurs were eighth.

Manchester United finished the season top dogs in the Premier League (with Aston Villa runners up ten points adrift). Nottingham Forest finished bottom of the pile and went down with Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.
