Matchday Memories: On This Day 2010 – See Sky Blue Clive & Lukas Impress At Ipswich!

Aidy Boothroyd- Sky Blue ‘gaffer’

On this day (16th October) just fourteen years ago in 2010 the Sky Blues under Aidy Boothroyd travelled into the depths of East Anglia to take on top six Championship side Ipswich Town at Portman Road with the Sky Blues aware they had not won there since 1994. Perhaps surprisingly the Sky Blues ended up deservedly beating the Tractor Boys by the odd goal in three and the win could have been even more comfortable as both City’s goalscorers each also hit the home team’s woodwork during the game.

CCFC took the lead with a well worked goal as two Sky Blues who are now Association members combimed to score. A City corner was met by Aron Gunnarsson beyond the far post who looped it back across the goalmouth for Aron’s now fellow CCFPA recruit Clive Platt to rise above defenders to head it in on nineteen minutes to net his third of the season.

City kept the one goal advantage through half time and doubled it in the second period when Lukas Jutkiewicz dribbled round Gareth MacAuley in the box only for the Ipswich man to bring him down. Lukas picked himself up to decisively score the penalty on 56 minutes past the Tractor Boys’ ‘keeper Marton Fülöp who had previously played for the Sky Blues on loan in 2005-06 (and sadly passed away at the early age of 32 in 2015)!

Jason Scotland pulled one back for the home team two minutes later with a smart finish and played some good football at times but the lack of creativity must have concerned/annoyed their irascible ‘gaffer’ Roy Keane

The increasingly confident Sky Blues held out to the final whistle (though ‘keeper Keiren Westwood had to keep alert) to give their 529 fans in the 19,100 crowd a fillip. The Portman Road win was only City’s second in their last eleven league games!

CCFC gaffer- Andy Thorn,

On New Year’s Day in the return game with Town at the Ricoh Arena the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw with the goals coming within the space of five minutes each side of half-time. Ipswich scored first on 42 minutes through Kevin Fallon and (now CCFPA member) Freddie Eastwood replied for CCFC  on 48 minutes.

Aidy Boothroyd was relieved of his duties in March with the Sky Blues struggling and Chief Scout Andy Thorn (now a CCFPA member) took over as caretaker ‘gaffer’ until the end of the season. The team under Thorn ultimately ended up their 2010-11 season safe in a lowly eighteenth spot. Nevertheless, City were a full thirteen points clear of the relegated trio, Preston North End, Sheffield United and (bottom) Scunthorpe United.

Queen’s Park Rangers (Champions) and Norwich City got the automatic promotion spots and were Premier League bound along with play-off victors, third placed Swansea City.
