Disappointing Final Score (& teams)

Grag waits for his interview with Harry

The Association’s ‘special guest’ at yesterday’s early kick-off Championship game was popular former full back Greg Downs.

Greggy was at the CBS Arena to watch a clash between two former clubs, the Sky Blues (his prime loyalty) and Norwich City. Sadly our 1987 F.A.Cup winner saw the game decided in the visitors favour by an early second half deflected shot.

The Canaries came to Coventry with a new boss and yet to gain a League win. They left having won their fourth match out of five visits since 2008. The East Anglian side are fast becoming a bogey club for CCFC as the Sky Blues are now winless in their last nine league meetings with them (D3 L6) ever since a 2-1 away win in February 2009.

In truth the Canaries deserved the win as Greg watched them dominate possession and control the game with slicker passing though our ‘keeper Oliver Dovin had little to do apart from pick the ball out of the back of the net in the 49th minute

This was a few minutes after Greg did his half-time pitch-side interview where he was warmly applauded by both sets of fans in another bumper CBS Arena crowd of more than 27,000.

Greg is welcomed to a corporate box

Prior to that Greg visited the supporters lounges in the Arena main stand conducting a number of jocular Q&As with club host, fellow former Sky Blues defender and CCFPA member Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts as well as visiting some of the supporters’ boxes in the Arena.

One of Billy and Harry’s Q&As (with current CCFC starlet Isaac Moore) will likely soon be shown on the Assciation’s Facebook page (just click on the button to the right of this article).

Other CCFPA members spotted at the game included Greg’s fellow ‘Boys of 87’ Dave Bennett and Steve Ogrizovic (in his usual spot with BBC CWR in the Press Box), CCFPA President Kirk Stephens, Ian Goodwin, Peter Hormantschuk and Graham Walker as well as Mick Hartford.

Dietmar Bruck with Greg in Lady Gs after the game

After the game Greg, as with all our ‘specials’, was taken down into the Arena’s G-Casino to meet some of the fans in the Lady Gs lounge where, from the stage, Association chairman Billy Bell did another brief interview enjoyed by the fans despite their disappointment at the result. They didn’t let that spoil their lusty rendition of the Sky Blue song conducted by Greg and Billy before wending their way home. You can watch part of this by clicking on the link or image below:-

Mark Robins men will certainly have to play much better in their next home game, the third round Carabao Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur, next month to make progress!

Thanks to CCFPA’s Rich Morris & Mike Young for the photos.
