Terry in the Sky Blue

Terry in the Sky Blue

We are delighted to announce that, very appropriately, we have signed up our member, former Sky Blue dynamo Terry Gibson to be our ‘special guest’ for next week’s Third Round League (Carabao) Cup tie at the CBS Arena against Premier League Tottenham Hotspur. Terry is remembered fondly as the diminitive striker signed by the Sky Blues in August 1983 for £90k from his first club, the ‘Spurs. Terry scored some memorable goals for CCFC including on his Sky Blue Division One debut in a 3-2 victory over Watford and also one against his former club at White Hart Lane in May 1985!

Terry went on to net a total of 52 goals in his 113 first team Sky Blues outings. Very much a ‘cheeky chappy’ type of striker many top division defences rued the day they faced his rapier runs and lightning quick reactions (including Liverpool against whom Terry scored a notable hat-trick in 1983)

These qualities persuaded Manchester United to cough up £650k plus (now fellow CCFPA member Alan Brazil) for his services in January 1986, but he made a much bigger mark after moving on to unfashionable Wimbledon in August 1987. There, under fellow CCFPA member, ‘Cov’ kid and former Sky Blue player and gaffer Bobby Gould, Terry became a founder member of their ‘Crazy Gang‘ and picked up the F.A.Cup a year after the Sky Blues own victory. With the original Wombles Terry made 108 appearances and scored thirty times  before winding down his career at Swindon Town (loan), Charlton Athletic (trial), Peterborough United and Barnet.

Hanging up his playing boots in 1995, Terry kept connections with the game coaching and scouting with the likes of Barnet, Wycombe Wanderers, Fulham, Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City as well as Northern Ireland well into the millennium. After he left Fulham in 2007,  having gained extensive experience of Spanish football whilst scouting, Terry has co-commentated on Spanish football for Sky Sports.

Terry also will be remembered by Sky Blues fans when he turned out in Sky Blue for the Charity game at the Ricoh against a Midland Select XI at the time CCFC first made their first, thankfully temporary, move to play away from Coventry, at Northampton Town‘s Sixfields Stadium. He was also back in Coventry for the funeral of Coventry City legend George Curtis in 2021 and most recently was one of our honoured guests at Legends Day 2023 in April that year  (right).

‘Madders’ in the Sky Blue

There’s bound to be a (near) sellout of the CBS Arena for the evening game next week and it may well be that Spurs will feature in their squad former Sky Blue favourite James Maddison to the City where he cut his footballing teeth! There’s also be bound to be many other CCFC ‘stars of the past’ from our membership attending the game so, arrive early and if you are located in the main stand look out for Terry ‘around the lounges’ for Q&As with club host and fellow CCFPA member Brian ‘Harry ‘ Roberts.

Oggy in the Press Box

Post match you can catch him down in the G-Casino under th Arena for a post-mortem on the game and some fun and games from the stage of Lady Gs with new CCFPA Chairman Billy Bell!!

If you really cant get (in)to the game next best thing is to listen to our member and club legend Steve Ogrizovic broadcasting live with the BBC CWR commentary team!

Thanks to CCFPA’s Mike Young for sourcing the images
