Matchday Memories: On This Day 2015 – Sky Blues Score All As Brewers ‘Go For A Burton’

Aaron in the Sky Blue

On this day (6th September) in 2015 Sky Sports cameras followed the Sky Blues to Staffordshire where they took on Burton Albion in a League One game with both teams harbouring promotion intentions.

In the end, our Manager Tony Mowbray must have been pleased since CCFC’s earlier attempts to get the game rearranged once more (because players like (loanees) Adam Armstrong and Bryn Morris were away on international duties) were declined by the F.A. Association.

The Sky Blues, scoring all three of the goals, came from behind to beat the Brewers 2-1!

In front of a crowd of 4,633 with a big showing of 1,791 members of the Sky Blues Army, Mowbray’s men found themselves one down after only eleven minutes when  Aaron Martin managed to inadvertedly put through his own goal after a Mark Duffy cross whizzed through several pairs of legs and cannoned in off the central defender.

However, it didn’t take long for a Sky Blue reply as (Aaron’s now fellow  CCFPA member) Marcus Tudgay equalised well before half-time (after 21 minutes) capitalising on a good pass from Jacob Murphy.

City completed the come back nine minutes into the second period to take all three points thanks to a goal from City’s fairly recent CCFPA recruit, French defender, Romain Vincelot which had an element of good fortune about it. A Murphy corner hit Aaron on the chest and might had trickled in but Romain made sure from close in.

A contemporary match report from BBC Sport can be found here.

In mid January, in the return at the Ricoh the Brewers gained full revenge beating the Sky Blues 2-0 so taking away CCFC’s unbeaten home record! One of their scorers,  Stuart Beavon would find himself wearing a Sky Blue shirt a couple of year’s later (and also later joined CCFPA)!

CCFC 2015-16

Sadly, the promising first half of the season was not maintained in the new year. Thus, the Sky Blues who had once harboured serious promotion aspirations had to be content with an eighth placed finish. The Brewers had a much better outcome. It was Wigan Athletic (champs) who took the League One title but runners up Burton Albion also got promoted automatically together with sixth placed Barnsley (via the play-offs).

The relegated quartet was Doncaster Rovers, Blackpool, Colchester United and, at the very bottom, Crewe Alexandra.

Thanks to CCFPA’s Mike Young (& Dean Nelson) for sourcing the images.
