Matchday Memories: On This Day 2013 – See Callum Cash In As City Catch Colchester Cold!

Carl Baker with ‘Gaffer’ Steven Pressley

On this day (Sunday 8th September) in 2013 the Sky Blues were in the early part of their first period of SISU induced exile (at Northampton Town‘s Sixfields Stadium) and things were going pretty well in the league for (now CCFPA member) Steve Pressley‘s men. After losing their opener by the odd goal in five at Crawley Town the Sky Blues had been unbeaten in their next four League One games, with goals flooding in, and remained unbeaten at ‘home’.

This was to continue in today’s game at Sixfields against Colchester United, with a predictably tiny 1,789 crowd in Northampton (which including 272 U’s fans).  The Sunday game saw the Sky Blues take the points thanks to a brace from speedy striker (and now a CCFPA member) Callum Wilson, one in each half.

Callum’s first, seven minutes from the break, came from him following up a Sky Blue shot which was spilled by the U’s ‘keeper Sam Walker and his second, fourteen minutes into the second period, came when he was played through by an astute pass, rounded the goalie and found the net from a tight angle.

This made eight for the season for Callum already! City’s defence managed to keep quiet the U’s former Sky Blue forward Clinton Morrison (who is also now a CCFPA member)!

Joe Dunne‘s U’s side lined up:-

Sam Walker, David Wright (Clinton Morrison -45), Ryan Dickson (Mason Spence -19), Marcus Bean (Andy Bond -62), Jabo Ibehre, Craig Eastmond, Tom Eastman, Brian Wilson, Alex Gilbey, Tosin Olufemi and Drey Wright    Unused subs:-  Jordan Sanderson,  Conor Hubble, Michael O’Donoghue and Mark Cousins (gk)      Referee: Steven Martin

Colchester United gained revenge on the City in March beating the Sky Blues by the odd goal in three. Despite a reasonably good season, the ten point deduction received by the Sky Blues in August for exiting administration without a CVA meant that 51 points and eighteenth spot (four points and three places above the drop zone) was recorded for them in Division One rather the 61 points and tenth place. United finished in sixteenth place.

Champions Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by runners up Brentford climbed out of the division along with, after the playoffs, fourth placed Rotherham United.

At the other end of matters Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Shrewsbury Town and (at the bottom) Stevenage experienced that ‘sinking feeling’!

Thanks to CCFPA’s Mike Young for sourcing the images.
