Matchday Memories: On This Day 1986 – See Curtis’ CCFC Make Mincemeat Of Magpies

On this day  (13th September) in 1986  Sky Blues legends and former players  George Curtis and John Sillett were in the hot seat after taking over the previous season from (later fellow CCFPA member) Don Mackay. Sadly we have lost both giants of the Sky Blue family in the last couple of years. City were six games into their Premier League season and doing OK having only been beaten once so far. Today they were successful in adding to their two victories so far (home to Arsenal and away at Manchester City).

‘Killer’ in the Sky Blue

Their 3-0 victory at Highfield Road in front of a crowd of 11,439 was claimed against Willie McFaul‘s bottom of the table Newcastle United.  The Sky Blues play well shaking off their  ‘Houdini’ tag and effectively thrash the then struggling Magpies.

The partnership between current CCFPA committee member Dave Bennett and the late, great Cyrille Regis was blossoming and ‘Big Cyrille’ was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet. City’s defence also managed to keep Gazza quiet!

Micky in the Sky Blue

The scoring went like this. On the quarter of an hour mark the latest generation of imposing Sky Blue centre half’s  Brian ‘Killer’ Kilcline thumped in one of his ‘special’ free kicks. Three minutes into the second half ‘Benno‘ finished coolly to make it 2-0 and, on the hour, future Sky Blue ‘gaffer’ Micky Adams notched one with a volley after a long punt from Sky Blues ‘keeper ‘Oggy‘! All those named are now Association members!

Cyrille in the Sky Blue

The Sky Blues completed the double over the Magpies with a 2-1 win early in January 1987 with a two goal lead contributed by a  strike after only 42 seconds from Dave Bennett and a second goal from Cyrille Regis three minutes before the hour mark.

Newcastle’s consolation from Neil McDonald had to wait until the 85th minute as the Magpies plunged into their sixth defeat in a row! George and first team supremo John Sillett are best remembered this season for the club’s Wembley F.A.Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur in May 1987 but they finished very comfortably in the league in tenth spot as well.

CCFC 1986-87

That season Everton more than pipped their Merseyside rivals to the Division One title (nine points ahead of Liverpool).

Leicester City (20th), Manchester City (21st) and (shame) plumb bottom Aston Villa suffered the humiliation of relegation. Nineteenth placed Charlton Athletic avoided that fate after the playoffs.
Thanks to CCFPA’s Mike Young (& Dean Nelson) for sourcing the images.
