Members News: Terry Sees Sky Blues Go Out To Spurs In LC Injury Time

Terry awaits his turn as ‘Harry’ chats to Jay

Well it was an anxious and ultimately cruel Wednesday night for Sky Blues fans as they watched their favourites more than match Premier League Tottenham Hotspur in the Third Round of the League (Carabao) Cup yesterday. Goalless at half-time, with the Sky Blues having the lions share of the sparse chances and the Spurs gaining much of the possession, the second half proved crucial and ultimately gutting.

A Brandon Thomas Asante goal gave the Sky Blues a deserved lead just after the hour mark which they kept until only two minutes before the end. Crushingly, against the run of play, the visitors two ex Nottingham Forest subs, Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson (plus the skill of another sub, CCFPA member James Maddison) turned the game cruelly in the visitors’ favour. Spence breached the CCFC defences after 88 minutes and Johnson half way through the four minutes of added on time to send the Spurs into the fourth round instead of the Sky Blues.

Terry, Harry & Jay

The bumper nearly 25,000 crowd and a SKY TV audience were joined, amongst other CCFC Former Players, by our ‘special guest’ for the day Terry Gibson (whose first club was Spurs) and Association committee member Dave Bennett (who had specially positive 1987 memories of beating our opponents at Wembley). They were gutted by the outcome of the game after things had seemed so much brighter for the home team until so late in the game.

Terry’s h-t interview

As usual with our ‘specials’ Terry toured the supporters’ lounges before kick-off being interviewed by club host (and ex Sky Blue defender) Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts.

‘Harry’ also had CCFC squad member Jay Da Silva along for the Q&A’s. A video of part of one of these interviews will appear on the Association’s Facebook page in due course. Just click on the Facebook button to the right of this post.

With the score even-steven with no goals yet at half-time Terry went pitchside for another interview and was given a warm welcome by both sets of supporters who were not to know what was yet to unfold. Of the two ‘gaffers’ the visitors Ange Postecoglou must have been the more worried boss! On resumption of the game Terry settled down to watch the action with his fellow former player members of CCFPA but must have been somewhat crestfallen at the final outcome.

Terry & mostly Mad Hatters

Nevertheless immediately after the game the naturally chirpy ex striker was happy to join CCFPA Chairman Billy Bell on stage down in the G-Casino’s Lady Gs lounge for some banter in front of a slightly deflated audience of Sky Blues fans. There he also met some of the famed celebrity supporters of the club, the Mad Hatters and received a familiar mobbing!

As is tradition the evening ended with Billy and his guest belting out the Sky Blue song with the audience to draw a curtain on an ultimately disappointing evening. A video of this can be seen by clicking on the image or link below.

Q&A video

Thanks to Terry for being a great Wednesday night ‘special’. We hope to see him back at the CBS soon!

Thanks to CCFPA’s Richard Morris for the photos and video of Terry’s evening with us.
