Mick Walters in 1958

The Association today sends its best birthday wishes to our member Mick Walters. One of the Club’s and Association’s older surviving members, born in Banbury on 17th November 1939, Mick is celebrating his 78th birthday today!

Mick came to the ‘Bantams’ (as the Sky Blues were then known) in the mid 1950s as a junior from Banbury boys becoming a regular reserve and ‘B’ team player and occasionally featuring in the first team. An uncompromising full back, Mick made his Division 3 South debut against Millwall in November 1957.  After three Division South (and one F.A.Cup) appearances in the first team Mick eventually left for Rugby Town in 1959 before spending half a season at the heart of Bradford City’s defence and then becoming a stalwart of Burton Albion’s team from 1963.

Mick joined the Association in 2010 having been visited at his Oxfordshire home by our late committee member Bob Bromage when they spent a good hour reminiscing about the old days. Bob told us then that Mick had not changed much over the years and had then not been in contact with anyone or anything to do with the club for over 15 years previously but was especially pleased to be put in touch again. Mick was at the club when we were last in the bottom tier of English football in 1958-59 in the old Division Four and is pictured centre of the front row (below). Hopefully we can emulate that squad this season by getting promotion at the first attempt!

Sadly we have still been unable to persuade Mick to come to the Ricoh to meet former colleagues from the 1950s like Lol Harvey, Brian Nicholas, George Curtis and Mick Kearns but hope this can be remedied before too long. In the meantime we hope you have a wonderful day today Mick!
