Les Sealey in Sky Blue action

On this day (19th August) in 2001 the footballing world in general and the Sky Blue family in particular lost our former goalie Les Sealey who died in Southend on Sea following a heart attack aged just 43!

Les Sealey

The 6’1″ Londoner began his professional career as a shotstopper with CCFC after coming through the apprentice ranks with the Sky Blues from 1976 and debuting as a 19-year-old in April 1977 at Q.P.R. in a 1–1 draw.

Becoming a first team regular, until 1982 he often vied for the No.1 jersey with (now CCFPA member) Jim Blyth. By the time he left for Luton Town in August 1983 for £100k he had pulled on the Sky Blue jersey 178 times and also returned to Highfield Road on loan from Aston Villa in March 1992 for another couple of appearances covering for ‘Oggy’.

At the time of his premature death Les was coaching with West Ham, a career tragically cut short before he had a chance to join this Association.
